Is TRE Olive legit?
TRE Olive is named for the number three in Italian: three cousins, Joe, Michael and Diego, who founded the brand in 2009 to sell oil from their family’s groves in Feroleto Antico, Calabria, where the family opened its first olive mill in 1934. Unlike most programs in this series, you can find them: a physical address in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, a phone number that answers, a Better Business Bureau file open since 2019 with zero complaints in the last three years, and gift boxes stocked at Costco. Their Carolea monovarietal took a Silver at the 2020 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition. On the basic question this series keeps asking, who am I buying from, TRE Olive answers on the first page.
The adoption itself comes in three tiers. Express at $89.99 ships three 500ml tins at once with a certificate, but note the fine print: no tree is tagged with your name at that tier, and you get a photo of a grove section rather than your tree. Full at $164.99 is the real thing: your name on a tagged tree for the year, photos of it, and six 500ml tins across two shipments. Premium at $215 adds volume and flavored varieties. Shipping is included, and adoption oil arrives in a spring window, targeted at late April or early May, after the autumn harvest.
Now the honest caveats. Shipping is US only; the company dropped Canada over carrier costs. No organic certification is mentioned anywhere on the site. The headline review count, 681, lives on Loox, a merchant-installed widget where no negative reviews are visible, and the independent footprint is far smaller: a 4.9 from seven Tripadvisor reviewers and a handful of Google ratings. And the family mill presses local farmers’ harvests as well as its own, which is an honorable tradition in Calabria, but it means a purist should ask how strictly adoption oil is segregated from the wider intake.
Our verdict: among the most credible programs we have reviewed. Real named people, a real address on two continents, a clean complaints record, and third-party recognition for the oil itself. Choose the Full tier over Express if the point is a tree with your name on it, and go in knowing this is a once-a-year spring delivery, not a quarterly drip.
